It's been a long time since I did anything with my Late Antiquity collection and hence this blog! I haven't been able to get to the club much lately and I have wanted to have another go at these rules to familiarise myself with them before inflicting them on anyone at the club, so while I had a bit of free time on my hands over the weekend, I set up another solo game in the shed this time.

I wanted to see if the Goths had a chance of winning with the forces I have, as the first game ended in a Roman victory. The results of this game indicate that they don't! I had the rules more under control this time, and played the skirmishers better, which made the results much more lopsided in the Romans' favour! I'll need to boost the Goths' numbers in infantry or skirmishers or both, I reckon, to get a more even result.

The table was divided by a low ridge with a rocky outcrop and wood with the opposing armies either side of the ridge. The Goths got initiative and their light infantry and archers headed for the woods, while the infantry went to the left and the cavalry to the right of the terrain obstacle. The Romans did likewise, but sent their light cavalry ahead of the infantry and the horse archers ahead of the heavy javelin cavalry.

With the Gothic infantry in bad morale, unlikely to be able to reform, the game was declared another Roman victory, despite the Gothic cavalry being untouched. I suppose if I had used the cavalry to support the infantry instead of going on a flanking march, the result could have been different, but I still feel the Goths need more infantry to counter the preponderance of skirmish forces.

Ben Gilmourhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09548280904041987733noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8160065685743989732.post-8562497440050013952014-07-04T07:15:00.000-07:002014-07-04T07:15:43.814-07:00Comitatus is Go! - First Solo Game

It's been a while since I've posted anything here, and I've always meant to have a solo game to work out the basic mechanics of the rules before inflicting it on anyone at the club. As I had the day off today I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone and play a solo game and then write a battle report.

I still think I need another game under my belt and try a few different things, as I don't think I got the hand of missile fire and I know I made a few errors with movement and the early combats. The few things I learned is that mass is might (as it should be in a god rule set!) and the Romans in defence are a tough nut to crack with infantry.

In my next game, I think the Goths will have to use their preponderance in heavy cavalry more cleverly, and to remain in cuneus when contacting the enemy, with at least one stand behind in deeper formation, rather than dissipating their strength in spreading out. Also, there was only 10 points the difference between the two sides in favour of the Romans, but I think the Goths could do with a little more oomph for the infantry: I'll probably have to paint another couple of stands to provide the muscle.

Apologies for the lighting; there was either not enough or too much as the sun started shining directly through the front window after starting off cloudy.

I think I'll actually have to play a full game to fully get the hang of it, but I reckon that with practice, I'll get into the swing, as long as I forget about artillery and musket ranges!

These Gothic light cavalry skirmishers bring this long drawn out process to an end and hopefully I'll get a solo game in this weekend to familiarise myself with the rules.

These are Italeri "Gothian" Cavalry figures with a couple of changes: Their spears have been shortened to resemble javelins, and the figure hurling the javelin has another added to the inside of his shield

This post sees another base of Gothic shock cavalry (although they could conceivably be used as heavy javelin cavalry instead) and a unit each of Roman and Gothic archers.

The Gothic cavalry are again from the Italeri 'Gothian' Cavalry set, though I've had to modify a couple of the figures to my preference, namely the middle figure and the figure with the cape. The middle figure was the one waving a puny sword that resembled an overgrown butter knife, so I've cut that out and replaced it with a javelin from the HaT Roman Light Cavalry set. The figure with the cloak has had his spear cut down to a more managable javelin/dart size, and is bearing a shield from the Italeri Late Roman Infantry set, just for variation.

The archers' bases are slightly anemic as I was running out of figures, so instead of having the requisite 4 figures, these bases only have 3. I'm not that fussed as the base is still the same size and 3 figures is a little less crowded in the same space.

The Roman base has two figures from the Italeri Late Roman Infantry set and one from the Miniart Roman Infantry set, while the Gothic base has 3 figures from the Miniart set. Just for variation, I've added a small shield from the HaT light cavalry set to the belt of one of the Gothic archers.

With these two stands, I have finished all the infantry and command required. I now need a couple more stands of archers for both sides and another Gothic light and heavy cavalry stand each.

The Gothic infantry are another mix of Miniart and Strelets figures which bring the total of infantry stands to six, or enough for 2 x 3 stand cunei, or attack columns.

The Roman command stand was one which I had a long hard think about. I wanted it to stand out from the rest of the Roman cavalry stands, so I used two figures from the light cavalry set coupled with one from the medium cavalry set as the general.

Both light cavalry figures were altered, one with a draco added in place of the spear and a head swap, and the other with a cross piece added to the spear and a homemade vexillum glued in place. I couldn't think of how to decorate the shields, but I knew I wanted to do something different. I considered a winged Nike holding a laurel wreath, but decided that was beyond my talents, so decided on a wreath and Chi-Rho combination ie. Christ the Victor. Then I remembered I'd seen something along those lines in a book I had read recently and found the image of Honorius holding a banner that said in translation "In the name of Christ, you are always victorious", which I thought would be an appropriate thing for my general to aspire to! I knocked up a teeny-tiny banner in Paint, coloured it in with my daughter's felt tip pens (no access to the colour printer at work while I'm leave!) and Robertus is your avanculus!

The horse archers are from the HaT Light Cavalry set and the infantry are from Miniart with an interloper from the Italeri Late Roman Inftary set sporting a Mininart shield and a shortened spear. He also has an extra javelin glued to the hand holding the shield, ready to take after he's thrown the one already in his hand.
Here's the latest for my Comitatus project: Gothic shock cavalry and Roman light cavalry and horse archers.

The shock cavalry were my last entry in the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge which earned me 24 points, bringing my total up to 744 (144 points above my target! Whey-hey!) and finishing in 26th place out of 60!

The figures are Miniart, with a ring-in from the Italeri Gothic Cavalry mounted on a Miniart horse

Again the Romans are Miniart, though I've given a couple of figres new heads from the Italeri figures, and the Germanic warriors are from Strelets.

I've used the bow-string technique I tried earlier on my Roman archers to jazz up my archers. I reckon it's worth the effort and certainly makes the clone effect of the same poses less noticeable! The Newline figures are very nicely sculpted and produced, but they do lack a little in variety of poses and animation.
These chaps earned me 30 points, with a couple of points extra for the bowstrings, which brings me to 25th place int the challenge and 12 points away from my target of 600 points. After getting nowhere near my estimated total in my first outing, it looks like I'll actually exceed it this time! WooHoo!

This is my latest entry for the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge which earned me a total of 45 points, including a few points extra for the hand-painted shields. Italeri kindly moulds the pattern onto the shields which makes it easier, but also limits the patterns somewhat.

The shock cavalry stand includes the figure brandishing a sword, which I had to convert because the original blade looked like he was brandishing a table knife rather than a weapon! After carefully cutting out the original sword and making a groove in the figure's hand, I replaced it with one of the swords from the HaT Roman Medium Cavlary set and glued a sliver of sprue to replace his thumb which didn't survive the surgery. He looks a lot more menacing with a proper sword!

I'll be making a couple more stands of each, before going back to some more infantry, skirmishers and archers, then switching to the Romans to give them more skirmishers, archers and heavy and light cavalry. Before long I'll have enough on both sides to have my first battle!

Hooray!

Expect to see more in the next few weeks as I paint up more Germanic infantry and cavalry as part of the 4th Annual Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge.

As a taster of what's to come, here's the latest Germanic tribal infantry stand using Strelets and Miniart figures.
Here's a small half-stand of Miniart archers I completed for the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge. My output has definitely slowed, but I'm hoping to have some more Roman medium and light cavalry and some more Germanic infantry (possibly Germanic cavalry, too!) before the challenge is over in mid-March.

I've used the same brush-bristle technique for the bowstrings as I used in my first archers' stand, and set the off-centre, so that when they are standing formed up with the other archer stand they won't be in any danger of taking out the front row!

Whereas the Italeri archers are definitely Romans, the Miniart figures could conceivably be used for Germanic forces too.

This time a Germanic infantry stand. The front row are all Miniart figures, while the rear are Strelets. I had fun with these, and the reward is that Curt awards extra points for hand-painted shields!

As part of the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge I've painted up a command stand of Newline Designs Romans. I've painted up the infantry commander and his retinue as an extra infantry stand incorporating a command element, so that it will add its strength to the infantry line, but acts as a command bonuses to those units around it.

As befits a commander, I've given his bodyguard inspirational Chi-Rho designs to their shields so that all know that God is on their side!
This one is again mostly Italeri figures with a couple of Miniart ring-ins, all using the shields from the Italeri set for consistency.

I also indulged in a little surgery to convert one of the ridiculous poses Italeri have a penchant for, to something a little more realistic and useable in a shield-wall formation. I also repositioned the head of the figure 2nd from the left in the front row so he's actually looking ahead at the approaching enemy and not off to the side as he was originally sculpted.

I recently finished this tome which could be considered the companion piece for the author's other title reviewed here, The Fall of the Roman Empire.

This book focuses on the reasons why the movements of barbarians happened in the first place and how these movements of large groups affected the status quo of Europe.

The author uses modern theories of migration as his starting point and then using them as a framework, interprets existing literary and archaeological evidence to expound his own theories. He also describes previous academic historical interpretations of this period and critiques them in light of his own theory. While not dismissing these theories completely out of hand, he offers a more nuanced and seemingly realistic interpretation of the old Volkerwanderung story.

He is more of the opinion that the pull of economic factors were more responsible for the attraction of barbarian peoples to the Empire, rather than the push factors of political upheaval such as occurred with the advent of the Huns. As happens today, the lure of the developed world is the primary factor for migration, especially from the under-developed world. Heather argues that similar factors were at play then. The tribes along the border were integrated into the Roman economic system by trading with the garrisons, providing auxiliary troops in return for payment as well as being paid subsidies by the Empire in return for peaceful relations in a kind of divide and rule policy. Those tribes outside this periphery, while sometimes supplying raw materials like amber and iron or controlling the trade routes of these commodities, could see that it was much more economically rewarding to be in the inner circle receiving the subsidies and directly trading with the Empire. So, periodically, these groups would raid the established Roman allies and even the Empire itself.

In their previous entities, Germanic tribes weren't large enough to do more than raid, so the next step in political development was for these tribes to organise enough muscle to be able to take over the position of most favoured nation status from those who already had it. Previous tribal groupings involved retinues of a couple of hundred warriors who followed one leader, supported by the rest of the lower status members of the tribe who grew the crops and farmed the animals. Even the amalgamation of these warbands under an overlord still didn't really offer enough muscle. The truly innovative and new behaviour most clearly seen in the rise of the Goths, was the wholesale recruitment of all males in the tribe to join in the warband. Not only did the nobles and their freemen fight, but the next layer down or the freedmen or lower status food producers were required to fight as well. This meant that in order for the whole community to survive the loss of manpower, everyone would in turn have to follow, transplanting their whole community wherever the warbands conquered. As farming technology and techniques meant that these tribal communities had to move every generation or so once the soil had been exhausted, it wasn't such an upheaval as might be expected otherwise. Once the precedence had been set, then the likelihood of further moves increased.

Rather than ready-made nations on the move, as the 19th and 20th century nationalist interpretations would have us believe, these were groupings of peoples (not necessarily even ethnically related) who banded together to extract the wealth of the Roman Empire for their own benefit. Once they'd displaced those on the fringes of the Empire, the next step was to demand access to the Empire for themselves to become integral parts of it. The Goth, Vandals, Suevi, Alans ands Burgundians all were attempting to get a slice of the action rather than to actively destroy the Empire. The survival of Roman practices and latinate languages especially in western Europe point to the adaptation of life to the new rulers (or the other way around!). In Britain, the large number of smaller groups of Germanic tribes who appeared over a longer period indicate the lack of resistance they faced and the logistical difficulties of sea-borne travel. As a result, more smaller kingdoms appeared than were usual on the Continent. Also, as there were more wealthier, higher status members of these bands compared to the Continental groups, there was more seizure of British estates than in Europe which allowed the invaders' language to become the dominant tongue.

The book follows all the main migrations right up until the year 1000 including the spread of the Slavs and Vikings as well. All were related and all had major impacts on the political landscape of Europe, laying the foundations of the states that in turn became the nations of Europe as we know them today.

I found it a heavy read, which took me a long time to plough through, but it was highly rewarding in the end. Not your usual narrative history, but provides a lot of food for thought, and clearly makes the case for the Dark Ages just being a continuum between the Roman Empire and the Medieval world. Fascinating stuff.Ben Gilmourhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09548280904041987733noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8160065685743989732.post-40231811600712030882012-10-02T22:55:00.001-07:002012-10-10T19:29:02.146-07:00More RomansHere's my first use of Italeri Late Romans. Here's the first base of Germanic types to oppose the Romans. These chaps are formed up as shock infantry according to the Comitatus rules; they aren't in serried ranks, but in a rough wedge following a leader. 3 or more of these stands grouped together form one unit that can be ordered in a cuneus, or attack wedge, or column.

Huzzah! I received my full-colour rule-book in the post a couple of days ago as a belated birthday gift from my father. We were both expecting it to take a lot longer, but it arrived only a couple of days after my birthday.

It's basically the same beast as the free pdf download that used to be available, but with the added bonus of lots of lovely full colour diagrams and photos to illustrate troop types, formations and combat procedures. It has a handy-dandy quick reference sheet, too, which will be useful in the heat of battle!

I'm really looking forward to giving the rules a go. They seem straightforward enough, but not too generic. I'll have to get used to the pre-firearms period: no artillery, no muskets, just good old fashioned biffo!

Now to hurry up and finish my armies....Ben Gilmourhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09548280904041987733noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8160065685743989732.post-57858310118804099582012-09-25T03:26:00.003-07:002012-09-25T03:52:01.219-07:00Hairy, Scary Barbarians!I got myself a box of Strelets Ancient Germans recently and decided to take a break from painting Romans.

They are probably historically too early for the late Roman period as their shields include ones with Celtic-style spined bosses, but what the hey, I think they'll do.

I love the poses on these fellas; they're all in aggressive fighting stances, none of the wishy-washy Italeri poses, although there is a preponderance of swords, when spears would be more common. All of those not wearing helmets (the majority) wear their hair in either top-knots or Suebian knots, which is a nice touch, too.

Not sure what the last chap is wearing on his head, whether it's supposed to be a Sioux-style feather headdress, or if they should be oak-leaves. I've gone for feathers.
