A long time between posts!

As part of the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge I've painted up a command stand of Newline Designs Romans. I've painted up the infantry commander and his retinue as an extra infantry stand incorporating a command element, so that it will add its strength to the infantry line, but acts as a command bonuses to those units around it.

As befits a commander, I've given his bodyguard inspirational Chi-Rho designs to their shields so that all know that God is on their side!

Primum miles

This is the first cab off the rank of the Miniart Roman infantry. 

They paint up quite easily. However, I've just realised why they don't look quite right to me : their fists should actually be inside the shield boss. As they are, it looks like the shield is being held by an external handle. Maybe next figure I'll cut off the hand and glue the shield directly to the wrist.

My shield design was not as successful as I'd hoped, as I had trouble cutting out the hole for the central boss and made a bit of a pig's ear of it. Gluing it on also made a bit of a mess that necessitated painting over the design to patch it up. Then there's the noticeable line of the edge of the paper, especially around the bottom of the shield. Maybe next time I'll cut out the blue star only, rather than the whole shield shape. As a first experiment, it's not too bad, but not exactly what I was hoping for.

He'll get the wash treatment, and then be the first on a base of 8.

Roman Shield Patterns

These are my first attempts at creating shield designs for my Romans. They are supposed to represent the Defensores Seniores and the  Cornuti Seniores respectively. No reason why I chose them, besides that they were relatively easy to bodge up using Word. I'm not sure of "brigading" of regiments in this period, so I may well have started off on the wrong foot completely, but there you go!


As the majority of the shields in the Miniart set are ovoid, rather than round, that's how I've created mine so that they'll fit on the shields. If anyone out there would like to use these for their own collection or to modify, please feel free. Obviously these are made for 1/72 scale, so you'd have to up the scale for 28mm or reduce for 15mm.
